Arrival, information and city transport

Both buses and intertown dolmuşes use the otogar, about 7km north of town on the Ankara road; bus companies have their own servis buses, which will deliver you to the town centre, and there is also a blue-and-white municipal bus marked “Terminal Otobusu” linking the otogar with the centre. Whichever you use, alight either near the Atatürk statue on Cumhuriyet Caddesi for accommodation on the west of the old city, or at the Belediye (Town Hall) corner for the east side.

West of Konyaaltı Beach is the main harbour and dock where ferries arrive from Venice – it’s 10km from the centre of town and there is no dolmuş service, so you’ll have to take a taxi to the centre. Antalya’s lushly landscaped airport stands at the centre of a maze of motorways some 12km east of the city. Taxis into town cost about €20 per car during the day and €30 between midnight and 6am. Be aware that taxi drivers often tell you that the hotel of your choice has closed and offer to take you to another where, predictably, they earn a commission. If this occurs, be insistent. There is a new municipal bus from the airport that goes to the otogar (1.5TL; departures every two hours) and the hourly Havaş airport bus (11TL), which drops off next to Yakuz Özcan Parkı on Konyaaltı Caddesi, 500m west of Kaleiçi.

The tourist office is located on Güllük Caddesi, 100m north of the PTT (Mon–Fri 8.30am–6.30pm, Sat & Sun 8.30am–5.30pm; 0242/247 7660). General information is available on Antalya and southern Turkey and city maps are available, but for in-depth information, enquire at your hotel or pension or a travel agency.

A tramway circles the old quarter and runs along the seafront; tram services are every half-hour (1.20TL) and departure times are posted at the tram stops. South from Kalekapısı, the Kaleiçi’s labyrinthine alleys lead to the most desirable pensions and downhill to the harbour.
